Exhibition "Amber in the Artistry of Contemporary Artists" from the collection of the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum was opened in the House-museum of Hermann Brachert in Otradnoye on 26 May. The exposition presents works of decorative, applied and jewellery art created by Russian and foreign amber masters. These works that enriched the museum's collection as a result of its extensive project and exhibition activity within the last decade, demonstrate the variety of methods, approaches and traditions of "sunstone" treatment.
Decorative and physical qualities of the unique gem allow to use it for artworks creation in such techniques as carving, polishing, pressing, coloring, composing and Florentine mosaics. Nowadays, as in the antiquity, the Baltic gem is used for manufacturing the works of jewellery and decorative-applied arts. And advanced technologies enable artists to create such artworks that have no analogs in the history of amber processing either in appearance, or in technique of execution.
There are both works by authors who are experienced in working with the "sunstone", and by those who hadn't even known about its existence until recently. It may be said without exaggeration that amber unites people of the whole world – artists, masters, experts and admirers of this unique mineral – witness of our planet's past.
The exposition was built by the workers of the Kaliningrad Regional Amber museum: conservator of museum items Vera Popova and specialist of the project and exhibition activity Irina Krivonos. After the official opening ceremony Vera Popova conducted an excursion. She told to the first visitors of the exhibition about the presented works, peculiarities of the Baltic amber and various techniques of "sunstone" treatment.
The exhibition works until 23 June.
