On 8 April at 17.00, exhibition "Baltic Sea Fossils" is opened in the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum. There will be pieces from the private collection of E.Kukuev, candidate of biological sciences, head of the Fauna Taxonomy Sector of the Atlantic Scientific and Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (Svetlogorsk, Kaliningrad oblast) in the exposition.

Efim Kukuev was born on 8 March 1947 in the city Klintsy of Bryansk Oblast. In 1974 he graduated from the Kaliningrad Technical Institute of Fishing Industry and Economy with specialization of hydrobiology, in 1984 he completed the postgradute studies in the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Academy of Science of the USSR and got a degree of candidate of biological sciences. He was awarded with a medal “Fishing Industry Veteran of the Russian Federation”, he is author of about 180 scientific publications, 10 of them are dedicated to the Baltic sea fossils.

At the exhibition it will be possible to see petrified remains of fossil fauna representatives of coasts of the Kaliningrad peninsula and southern part of the Baltic Sea, gathered mostly on the Svetlogorsk beach and adjoining locations. There are various Paleozoic corals and mollusks, Mesozoic sponges, bryozoans and belemnites (devil's fingers) demonstrated here. From the Caenozoic fauna – teeth of gigantic ocean sharks. They inhabitated the seas and oceans that no longer exist.

Variety of fossil organisms of the Baltics is connected with the complicated geological history of the region, especially because of last glacial age. The Baltic sea appeared as result of intensive melting of the giant glacier 11 thousand years ago. It left a lot of fragments of rocks brought from the North, that contained fossils.

Efim Kukuev started gathering his collection, when he was a first-year student in the institute, straight after the lectures in vertebrata zoology. In 2007 the first exhibition of fossils gathered by Kukuev was organized in the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum. The event was on everyone's lips, many citizens of Kaliningrad strted gathering their own collections. There are also items from the private collections of Ilya Kostenchik, Valeriy Vidyasov and Sergey Lenshin in the present exposition

The exhibition will work until 22 May.
