Lecture "Peterhof Lapidary Works"

The lecture will be conducted by the museum's deputy director for research, art expert, candidate of pedagogical sciences Irina Toropova within the project "Jewellery Encyclopedia".

The Peterhof Lapidary Works, one of the oldest state gemstones artistic treatment enterprises, was opened in 1721–1725 by the decree of Peter the Great. It had become the first in Russia specialized enterprise in production of artistic stone-carved items: vases, bowls, tabletops, caskets, cigar cases, tobacco boxes, sword hilts, stamps, various jewellery pieces. The main materials were agate, jasper, Ural malachite, Siberian nephrite, cornelian, chalcedony and others. There was diamonds and rubies cutting made at the enterprise.

In 1931, the Peterhof Lapidary Works was renamed to the State Factory of Stones for Technical Purposes. Since 1935 the factory started to produce items made of hard stones for the watch industry.
