Cupomania in the decorative and applied arts

The programme starts at 14.00 with a lecture "Cupomania in the decorative and applied arts" on the history of emergence and development of cups' form as wine vessels. The lecture will be illustrated with images of cups made of various materials (ceramic, stone, precious metals, glass) from the Neolithic age until today. Sources are collections of different museums of Russia, USA and Western Europe. Besides, there will be photographs of paintings showing various shapes of cups. In the second part of the lecture, history of sports trophy cups will be briefly covered and the most famous of them will be presented (the Stanley Cup, Davis Cup, the USSR Football Cup) and? of course? the FIFA World Cup.
The lecture will be conducted by the museum's deputy director for research, art expert, candidate of pedagogical sciences Irina Toropova.
At 14.30 a themed tour through the Amber Museum's permanent exposition takes place (cups in the section "The Amber Art of the 18th century", sports prizes and awards from the section "Königsberg Amber Manufactory"), and through the specially organized exhibition of cups from the museum's collection , which have been rarely or even never exhibited before.
