A lecture "History of jewellery. Pectorals" within the lecture series "Jewellery encyclopedia" takes place on 8 February at 11.00 in Kaliningrad Amber Museum. It will be conducted by the deputy director for research of the museum, art expert, candidate of pedagogic sciences Irina Toropova.
Pectorals appeared in the Bronze Age - 2000 years before Christ. Their appearance was defined not just by particularities of the culture of a certain puople, but also was changing in course of time. And it is a good chronological indicator that allows age dating of archeological findings.
There is a great veriety of historical and modern sorts of pectorals: fibula, penannular, agrafe, scatter pin, sakta, bouquet holder, brooch, clips and others.
Brooch is the most common pectoral in the contemporary culture. Its creation is attributed to madam de Savigne - waiting lady from the circle of Louis XVII. There were a lot of draperies in dresses of that epoch that required pins. This role was played by brooches, which first came in use exactly in the Baroque epoch in the 17th century. The biggest pieces chased with bright stones - emeralds, rubies, sappjires, pearls - decorated decollete of corsage or emphasized the waist.
Brooches had been in disgrace of fashionmongers scince the 1950s. But some outstanding women used them to create their unique individual image - Margaret Thatcher, Madeleine Albright, Elisabeth II.
In 20th century the fashion on brooches was tried to be brought back to life by the Chanel Fashion House, attached this accessoir right to the skirts of their models during one of the fashion shows.Broches has been used by almost all fashion designers and jewellery companies of the world in their collections ever scince...Today is the time of pectorals' prosperity, they are popular as decorative, so functional dress details.
